Long before "sustainability" became a modern buzzword, artisan communities practiced it by necessity. Materials were precious. Waste was unthinkable. Hand-powered processes consumed no electricity. Techniques were refined to use resources mindfully.
At Taru Studios, we don't impose sustainability onto our craft—we honor the sustainable practices already embedded in centuries of tradition.
Our Commitments
1. Cruelty-Free, Ethical Materials
Bone: 100% sourced from naturally deceased animals (camels, buffaloes) through government-regulated suppliers. Zero harm to living creatures.
Wood: Mango wood from trees that have completed their fruit-bearing cycle. Engineered wood (MDF) from sustainable forestry sources.
Shell: Ethically sourced mother-of-pearl with no impact on living ecosystems.
2. Zero-Waste Handcrafting
• Every bone piece is hand-measured and hand-cut, minimizing off-cuts
• Leftover fragments are reshaped for borders, details, and sample work
• Wooden scraps are saved for repairs rather than discarded
• Natural resin fills gaps, eliminating the need for synthetic fillers
"We try to reuse as much as possible," our artisans explain. "Small leftover bone pieces from cutting are often reshaped and used instead of throwing them away. This helps us reduce waste in a practical, handmade way."
3. Hand-Powered Processes
• No industrial machinery, no electricity-intensive production
• Traditional hand tools: chisels, files, cutters, hammers, sanding papers
• Human energy, human skill, human time—the most renewable resources of all
4. Low-Impact Finishing
• Water-based adhesives (Fevicol)
• Hand-buffing for shine (no chemical polishes)
• Natural resin for gap-filling and color
• Minimal packaging using recyclable materials

What We're Still Working On
Shipping Impact: International shipping has an environmental footprint. We're currently researching carbon offset programs and consolidated shipping methods to reduce per-piece impact.
Packaging: We use minimal, recyclable materials but are exploring fully biodegradable options for future orders.
Transparency: We're developing an annual Artisan Impact Report to share detailed information about wages, material sourcing, and community development initiatives.
